Burg Berge

The first seat of the Counts of Berg. Not much remains since the monks of the Cistercian Monastery nearby used the castle as quarry for their monastery.

The “Hzm Berg” was still the County of Berg on the left bank of the Rhine (Rhein). All territories in purple belong to the Cologne Church. (Erzbistum Köln; EBM Köln)) Notice to the north the County of Cleve. And in the west the Duchy of Limburg. Two of the major rivals of the House of Berg.

  1. Thanks for this. I have been moutainbiking around Altenberg with my cousin a decade ago.

Fun fact: here in Hobart Tasmania “Mt Wellington” (official name) is generally just called ‘the mountain’ (along with ‘the bridge’ ‘the river’ ‘the channel’ ‘the peninsular’ ‘the highlands’ (we have one of everything).

When it was decided to recognise the orginal owners and custodians of the land the Muwinna with a Palawa name, ‘kunanyi’ was chosen. It means ‘the mountain’ (other names in the historical record refer to elements of the mountain).

It’s likely that ‘Berg’ was a well established brand at the time. At time when things were not written down.
