The County of Berg (later Duchy of Berg)

The “Hzm Berg” was still the County of Berg on the left bank of the Rhine (Rhein). All territories in purple belong to the Cologne Church. Notice to the north the County of Cleve. And in the west the Duchy of Limburg. Two of the major rivals of the House of Berg.

The murder of Engelbert 1225

The attack that would lead to Engelberts death by Friedrich of Isenburg in 1225. Not a contemporary depiction, it was painted by Claus Meyer in 1900.


Not far away from today’s Severin’s Gate, Friedrich of Isenberg, the murderer of Archbishop Engelbert I, was executed with a wheel.
